How long can you wait to have your vehicle repaired? If you have surface damage to your car, it's very easy to decide to put it off -- after all, your car might just get scratched or dinged later on. But there's a difference between things that can be put off and things that need to be fixed immediately. It's often a good idea to at least get a quote for repairs and a professional opinion before making a decision. Damage Related to Crashes If you've been in a crash (even a slow crash, in a parking lot), you usually need to get your car repaired immediately. The visible damage is only going to be the tip of the iceberg. Even a slow crash can lead to damage to the suspension, frame, or other internal workings of your car. Once your car has been reviewed by a mechanic, you can then determine whether you need to get the damage repaired... but an inspection itself is usually not optional. Deep Scratches and Dents A small surface scratch can often be buffed out -- and dents can usually be put off. The exception is if they are deep. If the scratch or dent penetrates all the way through the paint, the damage can get significantly worse over time. Not only could rust begin to damage the frame of the vehicle itself, but the paint can begin to chip and pull off. Eventually, this will cause a large amount of damage on the surface of your car. Brakes and Steering Finally, anything that impacts brakes, steering, and other fundamental safety and usability features of your car needs to be checked immediately. If your brakes feel as though they are shaky or unresponsive -- or your steering is pulling to a certain direction -- then your car could be dangerous to drive. Further, if any sensors have gone off (such as the sensors that are related to safety features, like airbags), they should be checked. In general, if your car has experienced any violent damage -- such as a crash -- it's ideal to get it checked out immediately. If your car experienced minor damage, you might be able to wait for a little while, but you should still be aware that the damage is likely to get worse over time.
